Cramming like crazy for the grammar exam i have to take on Friday. Ugh. It's horrible. I hate grammar. I mean, I went to five high schools, so I never really developed the skills proficiently since one year I wouldn't have grammar and then the next year (at another school), I would but I'd be behind due to different curriculum's at different schools. Whatever. I just hope I don't bomb the test. I have a mock exam tomorrow, so hopefully that'll help me a little.

Free Printable Download: Last Minute Tags & Gift Wrap!

Last year I made some downloadable printable holiday tags for those last minute gift wrappers that like me, forget tags or wrap! This year I'm doing it again, these one's inspired by Sweet Paul's Thanksgiving tags and wrap; and with the help of The Commons images over on flickr - I found some gems of the snow-capped mountains here in the Pacific N.W. to design a collage with. Click here to download/print the tags, and here for the wrap. I already wrapped one little gift with them, and tied it with some fluorescent yarn. Happy wrapping!

OOPS: Psychic Who Said Amanda Berry Was Dead Silent After Berry Is Found Alive

by J

phony joney

A year after Amanda Berry disappeared in Cleveland, her mother appeared on "The Montel Williams Show" to speak to a psychic about what happened to her daughter.

Psychic Sylvia Browne, who has made a career of televised psychic readings, told Louwanna Miller on a 2004 episode of the show that her daughter was dead, causing Miller to break down in tears on the show's set.

"She's not alive, honey," Browne told Miller on the show, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper. "Your daughter's not the kind who wouldn't call."

Miller told the newspaper that she believed "98 percent" in what Browne told her. Miller died a year later from heart failure.

On Monday, Berry was found alive after she broke free from a home in Cleveland where she says she has been kept for the past decade.

Acid rain: the multitasker! (a stupid thought while stuck in a traffic jam)

blaa-blaaa:

Well, today I realized that acid rain is actually good for something:

It effortlessly unsticks all the those impossible-to-remove bug carcass splatters all over the windshield and hood of the car.

It does the job better than any of those sprays you buy at the hardware store! Marvelous - free and effective, and the more polluted the city, the better.

Ew.

Happy extremely belated Earth Day, people.

wrapper crafter exchanger

Hello! This blog was set up to allow candy wrapper artist to exchange wrappers and information on sources for candy wrappers. These wrappers are to be used to make candy wrapper purses, wallets, belts, picture frames and many other items. If you are a candy wrapper artist you know that each project may require hundreds of candy wrappers and please do not mention colors. It is hard to always find the color that you want for that special project.

My idea here is to keep things simple. If you have wrappers to sell or trade please post them in the comment section of this blog. First, if you have candy wrappers or potato chip bag material on a roll that has not been used, maybe you could list that by the pound. I would suggest sending between one quarter pound to 2 pounds. There should be enough in each order to at least do a small project. That would be enough material to make at least 100 pieces 2 by 4 1/2 inches in size.

If you have candy or other kinds of snack wrappers that have been used they must be cleaned and cut to the size of 2 by 4 and 1/2 inches. These should be placed in a zip lock bag, the snack size works great. I have found it is a good idea to avoid the black and white nutritional info on the back of the bag. Go for the areas of plain color or colorful larger letters or pictures. The wrappers should not be torn or crumpled. There should be enough pieces to do a small project ( at least 100 pieces). If you have smaller quantities of rare or very beautiful wrappers please feel free to post those also.

Another possibility is to exchange or sell kits. That would be the completed chains ready to be sewn together for a project.

If you have any other training or sewing aids that might be useful in making candy wrapper items please let us know.

In this format, I would not advise exchanging credit card info. If that kind of info is required, go thru paypal or set up your transaction as an auction on ebay. All materials should be water proof and not have color on them that can rub off. Candy wrappers and other material used for food packaging are very stable. I would not advise using wrapping paper of any kind because I have found the colors are not stable.

Affordable kitchen knobs and back plates — Kate saves $268.46

knobs

Retro-Cabinet-knobsOne easy way to make your kitchen look a little more mid century — while also protecting the finish on the cabinets — is to use a polished chrome kitchen knob and back plate combination. (Hey, Rebecca, how about these for your 1963 kitchen remodel, too?) Our first instinct is always to try and find authentic vintage kitchen knobs and back plates. Great finds do pop up on ebay frequently — but usually they are in small lots. That means, for those of us with more than a few cabinets to fit, it may be difficult to track down enough quantity of true vintage knobs or pulls. That’s where reproductions come in handy. I had 31 drawers and doors to outfit — so expensive reproductions gave me sticker shock. But fear not — I found a more budget friendly alternative that still delivers the same great style — and I saved more than $250 vs. the more expensive ‘go-to’ option.

cabinets-with-backplate-knobs

As regular readers likely know, Rejuvenation has several  mid century chrome cabinet knob and back plate combinations available. Rejuvenation is usually our first, go-to site when looking for midcentury hardware reproductions. They generally do a beautiful job with their reproductions, and Pam says that she has been impressed by the quality of the different items that she has purchased from Rejuvenation over the years. That said, you’re gonna pay — and increasingly so, we predict. Since the company was sold to Williams-Sonoma, are we right in noticing that their fanciest new lighting is getting wicked expensive? In any case, if you have a lot of cabinet doors and a tiny budget — their kitchen knob and pull options get expensive pretty fast.

polished-chrome-backplate-and-knob-rejuvenationAt Rejuvenation, the 2″ chrome dish cabinet knob with round backplate combination sells for $11. If you’re like me — and have a total of 31 kitchen cabinet doors in need of knobs — you won’t be excited to cough up $341 plus shipping for kitchen cabinet hardware.

Liberty-Round-cabinet-dish-knob-home-depot

So I went looking for a more budget friendly option — and happened upon this very similar retro styled Liberty 1.5″ Concave Round Cabinet hardware knob. It’s available at Home Depot – for just $1.38 each.

retro-chrome-backplate-from-HD-supply

Next it was time to search out some appropriate back plates. After some intense searching, I found a package of 5 chrome door knob backplates from HD Supply for only  $4.79 — making each backplate just 96¢.

knobs-with-chrome-backplatesAt first I was concerned that the HD back plates might be a bit to large for the 1.5 inch wide chrome dish knobs. The comparisons: The Rejuvenation combination pairs a 1.5″ knob with a 2″ diameter back plate, while my Home Depot + HD Supply combo pairs a 1.5″ knob with a 2.75″ back plate. After putting my two less expensive options together (as seen above), though, I ended up really liking the combination. And, there’s an argument to be made that by wider-diameter back plate is functionally superior — because it prevents even more fingerprint smudges and oils from landing directly on my painted wood when I go to open and close a cabinet or drawer.

I saved $268.46

The only thing that was better than the way the end result looked was how much money I saved. While it would have cost me $341 ($11 each set) to purchase my chrome back plates and knobs from Rejuvenation — my budget version came out to only $2.34 for each set — costing me $72.54 for all 31 cabinet knobs — a savings of $268.46 for my job. I’ve been using the knobs for nearly three years and the back plates for several months now — and they are holding up beautifully.

A note on adding the backplates to my kitchen cabinets – it will depend on the thickness of the individual cabinet doors and drawer fronts — but I did have to buy a few slightly longer screws for five of my drawers to make sure that they were long enough to go through the backplate and screw securely into the knob. For this I purchased a small container of size 8-32 machine screws (1.25 inches long) at my local hardware store for less than a dollar. Standard cabinet knob screws are 1 inch long — the extra .25 inch was just enough to make it through the backplate without being too long.

What do you think of my cheap and cheerful solution, readers?

Open thread: Real-world advice to consider if you’re NEW to your OLD house and contemplating a kitchen remodel

by pam kueber

good kitchen renovation advice

1960s-modern-kitchen-remodelSo this week I made a new Retro Kitchens Page aimed at helping helping readers get started with a kitchen remodel. Importantly, it shares some of my experienced aimed in particular at folks who are NEW to their OLD house and contemplating a kitchen makeover. My kinda major focus is… take your time. I came up with eight items. But, I want to make this the best page/advice possible. So today, OPEN THREAD: Readers, what else can we advise folks who are new to their old house and who are contemplating what to do with the kitchen? Above: Reader Rebecca recently finished a retro remodel; her story is in the pipeline. I bet she can add to the 411.

Here’s my start at it:

Some of my thoughts if you are NEW to your OLD house and contemplating a kitchen remodel:

vintage-safety-poster

  1. Environmental and safety issues come first. Vintage houses can contain vintage nastiness such as lead, asbestos, and more. Consult with properly licensed professionals to know what is in your house, and how to make informed decisions about how to handle.
  2. If you are new to your old kitchen — go slow. Before you proceed thinking you need a gut remodel, for instance, get to know your kitchen first. Live in it a year to get to know its flow. Get to know its original style and features. Get to know your “Retro Kitchen Style” — because not all retro is alike. It may turn out that, once you learn about the original features in your retro kitchen, you might come to love them — and you may not need to spend the money, and endure the aggravation of a major remodel.
  3. vintage-formica-catalog 1938Consider updates that are in harmony with the original architecture of your house. Sure, an original retro kitchen may be “dated.” But every kitchen is dated. For example: Don’t kid yourself: Put a 2013 kitchen in your 1955 house… and in a few years that 2013 kitchen will be “dated”, too — and, dated to the wrong year. But, put in a kitchen that is harmonious with the original 1955 architecture – and at least its date will match the date of the house. “Yes, but what about ‘resale’?” folks always ask. Well, my point of view is: Mid century houses are now old enough to be considered “historic”, either officially or non-officially. “Historical restorations” or period-appropriate remodels are desirable to folks who are “into” old houses. And, you can do a period remodel that isn’t “over the top” — one that’s kind of “flexible” (this is what I did with my three bathrooms.) On the other hand, going back to our example, a 2013 kitchen in a 1955 house is unlikely to appeal to a shopper 10 years from now who is into what’s new in 2023; in reality, your financial loss* (*See item #5, below) on your fabulous 2013 kitchen remodel will only grow each and year thereafter, especially if you put in “trendy” 2013 stuff.  And finally, mind you, “trendier” has a shorter lifespan every year. Disclaimer, thought: All this is IMHO, do not consider this financial advice, this is something you need to do your own research and consult with your own professionals on, based on your market conditions.
  4. edges-for-vintage-laminate-countersHumble materials – This point kind of goes with the one above. Many — probably “most” — mid century and older houses were decorated with materials that *today* would be considered kind of… low brow. Things like: Simple wood kitchen cabinets… laminate counter tops… vinyl flooring… even knotty pine. This is pretty much opposite of what the “mainstream market” wants to sell you today — (more expensive) granite… marble… blinged out cabinetry. I personally found it a relief not to have to spec out my kitchen to “Keep up with the Joneses.” My kitchen “fits” with the rest of my (humble materials) house. And by skipping the luxe, I think I saved a lot of money.
  5. money pitRecognize that most major remodels are a bad financial “investment”. Data indicate that most homeowners will not recover the cost of a major kitchen renovation when they to go re-sell. Read my story looking at the annual research — and be aware.
  6. Save your time, energy and money for the final fix. Unless there is a safety or environmental issue involved, I am not one for putting a drop of money into a space as a “stop gap measure” while we agonize over the big picture plan. Okay, I might paint the wall (off white), so that I can “see” the space better so I can figure out what I want. My husband is really good about reminding me: An old house is a time and money pit constantly presenting costly surprises. Be careful about squandering on half measures. ‘Invest’ in making plans that will endure for years… and then spend the time, energy and money — once.
  7. Get a subscription to Consumer Reports. When you are in spending mode like this, your head will spin. As far as I know, Consumer Reports is the only resource out there to do testing to try and really triangulate to “value”.
  8. Disclaimer and clarification to all of the above: I am not a contractor, an architect, a designer, a real estate expert or variant of some such profession. I am writing this from my perspective as an owner of four old houses over my lifetime, and as a blogger who has been writing on this topic for about six years. Do your own research… identify and engage your own properly licensed professionals… make thoughtful decisions that are right for you.

As you can see, I’m focused on the “planning” stage — not on prescribing specific solutions or “what to do’s”. Readers, I welcome your thoughts and experiences!

Readers, what else can we advise folks who are new to their old house and who are contemplating a kitchen remodel?

1950 time capsule house with 7 vintage bathrooms — Grosse Point Park, Mich.

by Kate
Anna

mmm

7-vintage-bathroomsTour-a-Time-CapsuleAn email tip from reader Anne led us to this stunning time capsule house in time capsule house in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, which is listed for sale by Kay Agney from Higbie Maxon Agney Realtors. (Trivia: GPP is yet another city where Pam has lived.) This stately house is a stunner indeed. And if you were in disbelief at our recent Portland, Oregon, house with five vintage pastel bathroom, well, hold on to your hat, because this Michigan beauty counts seven — yes, that’s seven — vintage pastel tiled bathrooms. (The listing says it has six because they can not technically count the bath in the basement, we are told.) Other exciting details in the house are a garden entryway with an amazing vintage tile fountain and coordinating patterned tile on the walls and floors, a curved staircase and several fantastic retro rec rooms. Thanks to Matti from Mixed Media, we have both wonderful photos of this property and a very extensive video tour to drool over, too. Not only does this house have unique details — but it also has an interesting history — involving a possible secret passage.

vintage-pink-and-aqua-tiled-bathroom

From the listing:

  • Price: $849,000
  • Year built: 1950
  • Square footage: 7,481
  • Bedrooms: 5
  • Bathrooms: 7

This fabulous and lovingly maintained Georgian Colonial features an interesting history! The updated kitchen will delight any chef, the spacious bedrooms have private baths, and the 2nd floor family room offers a wet bar and bath! Paneled library, garden room with a fountain, and beautiful grounds are only the beginning! Finished lower level with wine cellar, rec room, 2nd kitchen and 6th full bath! Extensive use of Italian marble and custom tile! Located on a Boulevard one block from elementary school!

I asked Kay for more information about the “interesting history of the house.” It turns out that the first owner in the 1950s was said to have a prominent position in Detroit organized crime, and rumor has it that there is a tunnel from this house to the one next door, where another member of the syndicate lived. It’s believed that the entrance to the secret passage is now walled off by a rebuilt cinder block wall just outside the basement entrance of the home.

vintage-pink-and-aqua-bathroomA subsequent owner reportedly lost his wealth on Black Monday 1987, and sold off valuable original pieces of the original house — including a Rosenthal chandelier from the dining room and lion statues from the front entrance. It’s also believed that he much of the home’s woodwork in the fireplace for heat. The house ultimately was purchased by investors, who renovated to restore the house to its former glory. The current owners are the fifth owners of the home — and over the years, they also have continued to restore and maintain this beautiful property.

vintage-blue-retro-bathroomWe are pretty darn sure in our guess that the tile and fixtures in all the bathrooms are original. Look closely — three of the bathrooms have tile covering not just the walls and floor, but also the ceiling.

retro-vintage-pink-and-blue-bathroomThe pink bathroom has a shower, tub and a dressing area.

vintage-maroon-and-white-bathroomThe profile of the mirror/medicine cabinet in this white and burgundy bath is awesome — and the tile so nicely edges the room’s windows and floor.

vintage-burgundy-and-grey-tiled-bathroomHere’s a combination we don’t see every day — a vintage maroon and grey tiled bathroom where maroon is the main color. The hex tile floor with flower motif is so charming.

vintage-white-retro-bathroomBy the time we get to the 7th bathroom — all the colors must have been used up. Even though it is only white on white — the basket weave tile floor adds interest. We’ll hazard a guess — housekeeper’s bathroom?

vintage-tile-pattern-in-entry-wayIf the seven vintage ceramic tile bathrooms didn’t impress you — this tile entryway — dubbed “the garden room” sure will. Detroit is home to the famous Pewabic Tile company. We wonder if this is Pewabic.

entryway-with-vintage-tile-and-fountainJust look at the beautiful pattern on the walls and floor — and then there is tile work on the fountain — amazing.

retro-wood-paneled-rec-roomAlso of note — this game room with inset linoleum flooring in a fun argyle like pattern. The warm fall colors are a wonderful complement to the wood paneling on the walls — we’re ready for a Ping Pong tournament, for sure!

vintage-steel-cabinets-gold-in-basement-kitchenJust when you thought the surprises were over — check out this vintage yellow steel kitchen in the basement. Pam calls these as: American Brand cabinets — if you squinch your eyes, you can see the hold in the center of the base cabinet doors where the cabinet pull went. 52PnB, do you agree?

Mega thanks to Kay Agney from Higbie Maxon Agney Realtors for allowing us to feature this wonderful property… to Matti from Mixed Media for allowing us to feature his photos and video of this truly beautiful time capsule house… and to reader Anne for the time capsule tip. Honestly, readers, you are just the greatest with all these tips — keep them coming! ?
