The Earth is home to some wonderful things. There are thousands of unique landscapes for us to explore, hundreds of nations all with their own rich histories and cultures, and there are billions of individual life forms all on their own journey. We also have booze.
Arguably some of these are common knowledge: Guinness is from Ireland, Vodka is from Russia and Tequila is from Mexico. But can you guess where Hawaiian Sea Breeze comes from? Hawaii? Yeah. Okay, how about Single Malt Whiskey? Or Vitalo?

If your advertising campaign’s goal is to redefine beauty and help High School girls accept and even embrace the flaws so studiously eliminated on magazine covers, you’ve got an uphill battle ahead of you. But Dove is fighting (and maybe even winning) that battle, and one of the ways they’re doing it is by putting the selfie to more empowering use.
The short doc Selfie, embedded above, shows how the company used the expertise of professional photographer Michael Crook and the oft-mocked ‘selfie’ to help High School girls and their mothers embrace the unique traits that they have, over the years, tried their best to hide.
The process involved giving the girls a photography workshop on the power of self-portraiture (much better term than selfie workshop, in our humble opinion) and then sending the girls home to take pictures of themselves that purposely incorporate the parts of them they didn’t like.
Those photos were then put up on display in an interactive exhibit where people were encouraged to write something they liked about the picture on a sticky note and attach it to the portrait.
In the end, of course, this is a marketing campaign, but the video struck a chord with us regardless. The practice of excessive retouching is so abhorred that some of that hate is spilling over onto photography as a whole. But photography is, or at the very least it can be, a great source for good.

This is an amazing research that confirms music can improve brain functions, and that there’s a strong correlation between musical training and certain other mental abilities such as levels of memory and attention, and language development in children.
“We therefore hypothesize that musical training (but not necessarily passive listening to music) affects attention and memory, which provides a mechanism whereby musical training might lead to better learning across a number of domains,”
Trainor, Director of the Institute for Music and the Mind at McMaster University in Canada

Now that you know how music can enhance our brain powers, you should really immerse yourself in music more, or even take up an instrument to play. Also look at this infographic presented by University of Florida on the psychology of music to understand more about how your brain respond to music.

I love coffee. To me it’s a magical elixir that helps me both wake up and not punch somebody in the face in the morning. But despite being many people’s caffeinated beverage of choice, few know just how good it is for you. So next time somebody goes on a rant about you should quit coffee, drop some of these knowledge bombs on them.
There’s a reason why caffeine can be found in most fat burning supplements. In fact, it’s one of very few naturally occurring fat burning substances. Studies have shown that caffeine boosts your metabolic rate by 3–11%, and increases fat burning from 10–29%.
Get your minds out of the gutter, I mean with sport!
The caffeine in coffee can increase your adrenaline levels. Also, it can release fatty acids from your fat tissue by stimulating your nervous system. They then enter your blood stream and thus become available as fuel. It’s therefore hardly surprising that coffee can lead to significant improvements in physical performance. You can utilize it by having a cup roughly half an hour before hitting the gym or engaging in any exercise.
Research has revealed that people who drink coffee are on average 25–50% less likely to get type 2 diabetes. Obviously, you’ll negate this risk if you add sugar to your coffee…so maybe don’t do that.
In addition to this, a 20-year study showed that diabetics who were coffee drinkers were 30% less likely to die from the disease.
There’s a reason that some of the world’s greatest revolutionaries sat around in coffee houses. We’ll ignore the fact that many of them were also smoking.
When a person consumes coffee, the caffeine within it blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain called adenosine. This has a stimulant effect because more neurons in your brain begin firing, which leads to improved energy levels and brain function. Trials have shown that some of the improvements within the brain include memory, reaction time and general cognitive function.
Research has shown that drinking coffee can help to prevent numerous neurological diseases, including those that are age related. Some of these include:
Sorry all, these statistics may be a bit, well, depressing.
Research from Harvard has shown that women who drink four or more cups of coffee a day are approximately 20% less likely to suffer from depression. In addition to this, anyone who drinks four or more cups a day can be up to 53% less likely to commit suicide.
Coffee seems to protect against two particular kinds of cancer—liver and colorectal. This a big deal, because they’re the third and fourth leading causes of cancer death, respectively. Research has shown that coffee drinkers can be up to 40% less likely to develop liver cancer and 15% less likely to develop colorectal cancer.
The liver is an important organ that helps hundreds of functions throughout the body. One of the worst diseases that can affect the liver is cirrhosis, which can be caused by things such as fatty liver disease and hepatitis. Surprisingly, studies have shown that people who drink four or more cups of coffee a day can be up to 80% less likely to develop cirrhosis.
As previously mentioned, caffeine can effect your brain positively when you imbibe coffee. One of these effects is increased energy. This is why you feel so delightfully perky after a cup. Just be careful of the subsequent caffeine crash afterwards.
Considering that we’ve been discussing a bunch of rather bad things that coffee can prevent, it’s hardly surprising that it can subsequently extend your life span. In a particularly large-scale study, men who drank coffee had a 20% lower risk of death, whereas women were sitting at 26%. This study was conducted over time periods between 18 and 24 years.
…no wait, you guys knew that.

It’s been a while since the era of the incredibly slow dial-up modems and excruciatingly buggy operating systems, yet still there are problems with slow computers. They are frustrating, time consuming and yeah, often you want to throw your computer out of a window.
US adults waste 4.1 days a year waiting for slow computers to catch up, that’s 16 minutes a day. That doesn’t seem like a lot, but our time is fleeting and precious. 50% of those surveyed stated they were aware they needed more exercise but felt they didn’t have the time to do it, and slow computers are part of the reason we are wasting our time.
37% of people said they felt more drained after waiting for their computer than they would have done if they had worked out. So, what can we do? Well, if you need or enjoy using your computer then you need to figure out why it’s slow and fix it – you can do this by cleaning and decluttering your software, and by installing better operating systems and browsers. If you’re not that bothered about being on your computer then simply do something else; go for a walk, read a book or do something else that you enjoy more than waiting for your dumb computer.

Sometimes the most simple, clean hairstyles are the most stunning. This infinity symbol shaped bun is no exception. We get so carried away with texture sometimes that we forget about the chicness of a clean bun. Thought this would be a way to mix it up and keep it from looking boring. Here’s how I did it!
Keep this one simple. Just think about making a “circle 8″ and you”ll get it! Check the balance of your infinity bun in the mirror when you’re done. The great news is, this bun still looks really pretty if it starts to get messy! Click read more to see a couple of extra images from other angles. From the side it looks like a basic bun! From the back it looks like much more. Good luck!

As a lover of unusual alphabet books — including ones by Gertrude Stein, Maurice Sendak, and Edward Gorey — I was delighted to come across a new edition of the 1989 gem Quentin Blake’s ABC (public library) by the great Sir Quentin Blake who, besides being famous for illustrating many of Roald Dahl’s stories and the first Dr. Seuss book not illustrated by Geisel himself, also illustrated Sylvia Plath’s little-known, charming children’s book.
Blake’s quirky watercolor-and-ink drawings and zany verses emanate his irreverent humor, enchanting young readers as much as they tickle grown-up imaginations.
Quentin Blake’s ABC is an absolute treat from A-Z. Complement it with advice to kids on becoming an artist from Blake, Sendak, Carle, and other illustrators.

Vale o play.

Too many of us are always seeking for happiness, believing that happiness is something that we need to chase and catch. Yet so few of us have figured out true happiness is not a destination but the path we’re actually leading.
“Happiness is a journey, not a destination; happiness is to be found along the way not at the end of the road, for then the journey is over and it’s too late. The time for happiness is today not tomorrow.” - Paul H Dunn
Happiness happens at your least expected moment. So stop chasing it, enjoy every second of your life and you’ll feel it.

Need a little inspiration for your next trip? Or some encouragement to begin your travels? These quotes from Maptia may be the push you need, or maybe you can stick or write the quotes somewhere as aspiration for the future; they have many uses. Happy travels!
Travel quotes speak of journeys not to be missed and remarkable places to see, they encourage us to step outside our comfort zones and to live life to its fullest, and they demand that we grab a backpack and set off into the wilderness. Yet when it comes to actually roaming the Earth or even just walking out the front door, it can sometimes be too easy to watch from afar, to live safely, and to be content with living vicariously through the adventures of others.
The best quotations have the power to inspire the reluctant traveller up and out of his door. Sometimes it takes the words of another man (or woman) to remind us of the importance of travel and of experiencing other cultures and ways of life. To remind us that we only get one lifetime on this Earth and that we should take the time to appreciate the remarkable places around us. Whether you are reading logic or wisdom attained centuries beforehand, or discovering a few words in a blog post written by the right person at the right time and place, quotes have the power to inspire action. One sentence can be the difference between dreaming and leaving.
With this in mind, we’ve illustrated 13 particularly inspiring travel-related quotations. We asked a few well-seasoned travellers for their personal favourites, found others tucked away in inspiring corners of the Internet, and dusted off a few of our own.
Whether you are currently exploring, have just returned from adventures, or are yet to take the leap into the great wide world, we hope you enjoy them.
