Weekly Shonen Jump Circulation Drops Below 2 Million Copies

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Alainmendez

WOW!

I wonder how much that has to do with people moving to digital since they don't mention that at all.

According to the latest numbers reported by Japan Magazine Publishers Association (JMPA) yesterday, the average circulation of Shueisha's signature manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump in the period between January and March 2017 was confirmed as 1,915,000 copies.

The number was less than one third of its peak of 6.53 million in December 1994 when it had nationally popular series including Dragon Ball (Akira Toriyama), Rurouni Kenshin (Nobuhiro Watsuki), and SLAM DUNK (Masahiko Inoue). And it is the first time for Japan's top-selling manga magazine to dip in circulation below two million since 2008 when the association started reported the verified circulation numbers.

Circulation of other two major Japanese weekly shonen manga magazines have been also falling. Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine, which had 4.36 million copies in its peak of 1995, now prints

964,158 copies in average. Meanwhile, Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday currently has 319,667

copies, only 14 percent of its peak of 2.28 million in 1983.

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Alainmendez

And so the Seventh Seal was broken and the horsemen heralded in the Apocalypse.

For all those Sonic the Hedgehog fans wishing they could see their original characters alongside our heroes in a game... now's your chance. The latest Sonic Forces trailers show the game's "Custom Hero" feature -- which allows players to create their own playable character for the first time in the history of the series.

The character creation function allows you to choose from a variety of colors, species, clothing, and gadgets to perfect your custom hero. A second new clip debuts Custom Hero gameplay on the Park Avenue stage:

The new game teams up two iterations of the speedy blue hedgehog to take back the world from Dr. Eggman. Players can play on 3D levels as Modern Sonic, and on old-school 2D platformers as Classic Sonic.

Sonic Forces will be available this holiday season for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Crowdfunding Campaign Aiming To Revive "Megazone 23" Nearly Hits Goal With 2 Months Left

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

For anime fans of a certain age, Megazone 23 was either a gateway anime, or just one of many anime titles that came to form the basis for much of late 80's and early 90's anime fandom with its focus on sci-fi action and mechanical designs, with the first episode of the series selling a reported 25,000 VHS copies in 1985. As previously reported, recent train station ads were found by eagle-eyed anime fans that confirmed a crowdfunding project to revive the franchise along with Pretty Sammy using the Campfire platform with AIC being involved.

Now, the Japanese Campfire campaign for Megazone 23 sits at 94% funded, with 63 days left on the campaign to raise 10 million yen. Normally, such a campaign would easily hit its goal and most wouldn't worry outside of the immediate backers, but with such a large amount being raised per person to fund a promotional video for the Megazone 23 revival before work gets underway on the new project, it's a wonder that fans still remember the show after all this time. It's too bad that Campfire is Japan-only, because I know plenty of people that would be willing to help fund this project.

New (Old) Japanese Genshiken Re-Release!

by sdshamshel

The first Genshiken manga is getting a new edition in Japan. Called Genshiken “Shinsouban” (“New Edition”), this new version will be five omnibus-sized volumes in total (as opposed to nine volumes in the original release), and will be printed on larger, A5-size paper. The volumes will also feature brand new covers, as seen above.

The first volume goes on sale May 23rd. As to whether or not I’ll be getting it, the answer is “probably.” I am a sucker for new covers, and the only thing preventing me from owning the anime version five times over was cost. It’ll also hinge on whether or not there are any store-exclusives like with the Genshiken Nidaime releases. No word yet on what, if any, special image cards will be included.

"Persona 5" Soundtrack Coming to Vinyl Later This Year

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

If you're a big fan of the Persona 5 soundtrack and a savvy record collector, you'll be excited to learn about the game's latest partnership. Atlus teamed up with iam8bit to release the Persona 5 soundtrack on vinyl, with two editions to choose from ahead of a Q4 2017 launch.

The Persona 5 soundtrack is up for pre-order now in Essential Edition and Deluxe Edition forms. The $100 Essential Edition packs in 4 records with selected tracks curated by the Atlus Sound Team. Or, if you're more of a completist, you can grab the full 6-record soundtrack with the $175 Deluxe Edition, which will be released in a limited pressing of 1,000.

As you can see, Atlus and iam8bit aren't quite ready to reveal the cover art, but they promise something stunning. iam8bit will also be documenting the creation of the sets in interviews, photos, and videos, including:

  • Mastering - They'll visit their favorite mastering studio, Infrasonic, and chronicle how music is mixed for the retro technology that is vinyl.
  • Test Presses - They'll show you what it's like to create lacquers & test presses, which serve as the benchmark for the vinyl's audio quality.
  • Vinyl Production - They'll hang with their friends from Noiseland at their factory in France, capturing the analog magic of melting "wax" and stamping records. It's pretty crazy to see because some of these machines are nearly 100 years old!
  • Packaging - They'll reveal just how much work goes into creating a unique packaging experience from design to printing to assembly.
  • Artwork - They'll reveal the "Mystery Album Art," the result of an intimate collaboration between iam8bit, ATLUS, SEGA, and a to-be-announced, top-secret artist.
