Best Flamewar Ever by Eddo Stern

“A two channel 3D computer animation diptych recreating an online flame war about degrees of expertise around the computer fantasy game Everquest. The specific points of contention may appear recondite at first glance, but gradually the unfolding narrative acquires an unexpected pathos and reveals a glimpse into the shifting codes of masculinity.”

1000scientists:

Plank Piece, 1973
Charles Ray

“Ray was part of a wave of artists during the 1970s who addressed sculpture as an activity rather than as an object. In the iconic two-part photographic work Plank Piece the artist documents the use of his own body as the sculptural component. The static photograph belies the performative nature of the activity presented. Contrived through a complex balance between weight and gravity the artist suspended his body using only a plank of wood, creating a minimal, graphic image that is at once humorous and unsettling.”

Remarkable Hobo Nickels Carved from Clad Coins by Paolo Curcio

Remarkable Hobo Nickels Carved from Clad Coins by Paolo Curcio sculpture money faces currency bas relief anatomy

About two years we featured a great selection of skull nickels, a numismatic curiosity where miniature bas relief sculptures are carved into coins, an artform that’s broadly referred to as hobo nickel art. While researching a follow-up article on Hobonickelart.com I stumbled onto the work of Paolo Curcio (aka “mrthe”) who appears to have taken the process of carving coins to an entirely new level. Using a variety of different coins the Barcelona-based artist creates etched homages to pop culture, illustrations of figures from literature, and most commonly: macabre portraits of skulls and death, probably the most prevalent theme in hobo nickel art.

One aspect of Curcio’s process that’s really amazing is his ability to use coins made from multiple layers of metal (referred to as clad coins) which he then strategically reveals to create colored flourishes and background patterns. You can see much more of his work over on his website, and keep an eye on his Ebay page for occasional coin listings.

The Creator Of Aeon Flux Made The Most Badass Fast Food Commercials

Remember how extreme everything had to be back in the 90s and early 2000s? Forget your stupid skinny jeans and your doofy smartphone; that was the decade of extreme sports, No Fear t-shirts, and in-your-face video game advertising. Even our burgers had to be EXTREEEEEEME!

Perhaps best known for is apparently hip new jack rap blogger...

postags

Good advice for any writer.

Perhaps best known for is apparently hip new jack rap blogger code for I’ve never heard of this artist but I typed his name into my computer and the first song that came up was…

Nobody best knows the recent and random songs mentioned above, not even the handful of people who do know them. Everyone who knows best knows that Tracy T is perhaps best known for his 2008 appearance on Gucci Mane’s “Stunt" and Marc Decoca is probably best known for 2006’s "J’s At My Door.” These rappers are both products of that old New Atlanta of the mid-’00s, a very influential and creative stretch for the most influential and creative rap city of the 21st century which has nonetheless somehow fallen through the cracks of the rap internet timeline. I wouldn’t necessarily call either artist a high ranking or even integral player in their respective circles but they both have an established history of making good songs that perhaps some people know well. This is probably part of the reason they’re still here making songs. Marc just dropped a very nice full length and Tracy’s first track with MMG is kind of alright too.

YOUNG PEOPLE: It’s okay to not know things about rap music, even if your career goals theoretically require you to know things about rap music. If you do find yourself in a position where you don’t know about the rap music you are supposed to know about then STOP and THINK. DO NOT just pretend that you know about this rap music, DO NOT poke around on the internet until it looks like you know about this rap music. SAY SOMETHING. It’s your responsibility to either disclose your lack of knowledge in the body of your work or to find a responsible and informed adult who can then educate you about this rap music.

“"I ain’t gonna lie, for the last three years Thanksgiving has been hard. I ain’t really been around my family. The last two years I think I ate White Castle. I didn’t even have a plate. This year I’m trying to eat good. I’m thankful for Chief Keef—for him opening up a door for me to be able to do my thing. Opening up my record label, Savage Squad Records, I’m thankful for that. I’m thankful for God and my family and just to be living. In Chicago a lot of people don’t make it to be 23."”

In an impressive display of new work, artist Yayoi Kusama (previously) recently opened a solo show, I Who Have Arrived In Heaven, at David Zwirner Gallery in New York. Now in her mid-80s, the prolific artist is showing twenty-seven new large-scale paintings, and not one but two of the artist’s famous Infinity Rooms (pictured above). The immersive mirrored environments can be entered by gallery visitors for a vertigo-inducing walk through an infinitely reflected field of stars and organic forms. The collected artwork and installation spaces span all three of David Zwirner’s galleries in Chelsea at 519, 525 and 533 West 19th Street and will be on view through December 21, 2013.
